So today I got a call from the Doctor's nurse today. She said I was a carrier for sickle cell disease.
Weird, my first reaction was confusion, second relief because I was white. (Most of the cases we are familiar with are within the African American community, however, the Mediterranean areas also have the gene and my mom is Greek.) So when I mentioned to the woman on the phone I was White, she put me on hold. As my face flushed and I giggled nervously I immediately began to Google the disease. It appears it is totally possible for me to be a carrier and as long as Todd is not we have no chance of our child getting the disease. If he is, we have a 25% change I think.
From http://sicklecelldisease.org/about_scd/index.phtml
If one parent has Sickle Cell Anemia and the other is Normal, all of the children will have sickle cell trait.
If one parent has Sickle Cell Anemia and the other has Sickle Cell Trait, there is a 50% chance (or 1 out of 2) of having a baby with either sickle cell disease or sickle cell trait with each pregnancy.
When both parents have Sickle Cell Trait, they have a 25% chance (1 of 4) of having a baby with sickle cell disease with each pregnancy.
Sickle cell disease is a global health problem. In the United States it is estimated that over 70,000 people have sickle cell disease. About 1,000 babies are born with the disease each year in America.
So just pray that Todd is not a carrier, and we should be fine. What this has done is made me aware of just how scary this disease and all other potential thing we may carry are for our baby. Now more than ever, I just pray for a healthy baby.

Hello baby lady! So-- I am sure everything will be fine, we don't have any known African or Mediterranean ancestors... we're pretty boring that way. I know that it will all work out great! Look forward to seeing you guys this weekend!
